India Birds Handkerchief

This beautiful hand blocked India Birds Handkerchief is reproduced from the collection of 

Dating from 1780 to 1810, this vibrant handkerchief features a trefoil leaf design in madder red on a white ground, surrounded by a scalloped border. It is speculated that this handkerchief was made in India for English import.

This would have been dyed in a madder dye, using two strengths of mordant to achieve the two shades of red.  Inexpensive to make, it would have been readily affordable to most socio-economic levels.
